Boy Are They Desperate!

This week has produced such a blitz of on-camera appearances and statements from several of the administration cronies that really show how desperate the hard-core Republicans are, just a few days of the partial elections.

Starting with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld who said Thursday that anyone demanding deadlines for progress in Iraq should "just back off," because it is too difficult to predict when Iraqis will resume control of their country.
“Back off?” Who are you talking to? Children in a schoolyard engaged in a fistfight? Come on Donald, this is the U.S. of A., not a second rate country run by a dictator. Or so we hope.

Another one entering the scene, as Laura Bush did, is the wife of the Vice-President.
However intellectually apt she may be, she has not helped the “cause” at all, especially when interviewers like W. Blitz on CNN grilled her on her writings from a book she authored called “Sisters”. Of course she denied that certain passages on the book hint to a lesbian affair but, in black and white, here’s a passage of that book:

"Let us go away together, away from the anger and imperatives of men. There will be only the two of us, and we shall linger through long afternoons of sweet retirement. In the evenings I shall read to you while you work your cross-stitch in the firelight. And then we shall go to bed, our bed, my dearest girl." You be the judge.

In the meantime, Cheney himself is under scrutiny thanks to something he said during an interview where VP Cheney agrees it's OK to dunk terrorists in water to save lives.
That prompted a rejection from the White House that the statement endorses "water boarding".
Of course it doesn’t endorse water boarding (a common practice in harsh interrogations, where the subject is almost drowned to scare him/her enough and hopefully confess to whatever the interrogator wants). If it was done it was meant to be just an innocent shower or a pleasant dip in the pool to relax the prisoner, I‘m sure.

An obscure figure, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told a top U.S. diplomat in Iraq, "I'm not America's man in Iraq," during a private meeting Friday, according to a senior aide.
This tops the list I guess, because, if he indeed is not “America’s man in Iraq”, then we all should bring the troops home and let him solve the Iraqi situation. That’s what a free country does. On the other hand al-Maliki doesn’t seem to be “Iraq’s man” either, since he apparently can’t control his own land and citizenry. He is really a symbolic figure created to give the appearance of democracy in a place where tribalism rule.

Finally, Bush gave up on something dear to him that worked for his followers for a long time. He will stop saying, “Stay the course”. RIP, GONE, KAPUT. No more of that. Let’s find another catchy phrase for the masses.

A terrible week for this administration, a bonanza for the Democrats. In a few more days we’ll see the results.

Out of the Kitchen and Into the Fire

Republicans pulled Laura out of the kitchen and asked her to step into the fire, at a time when barely anyone in the country believes a word of what the professional GOP politicians are saying.
Laura Bush is a very likable person, calm, soft spoken and motherly, so, I guess this is desperation time for the Republicans and George.
According to CNN “In her first public comments about Bob Woodward's explosive book "State of Denial," first lady Laura Bush sharply denied claims in the book that her husband has misled the public about the level of violence in Iraq.
Perhaps the word is not mislead Laura, I’d say the correct one would be lie.
"Of course, the president has been frank from the very first speech he gave to the country after the September 11 attacks, talking about this is a long war, this is a very difficult war.”
No he was not frank Laura. He said he would go after the masterminds of the attack, changing course after a few tries in Afghanistan and deciding instead to oust Sadam under false pretenses.
"It's a different war than our country has ever faced.”
War is war, what’s the difference here? Our young soldiers are dying all the same.
“The enemy can make a big show on television like they did for the bloody last month we had in Iraq by blowing themselves up a lot of times along with other people.”
Yeah, I’m sure they get together every day and decide to kill others and blow themselves up just for the cameras. The ultimate Reality Show!
“But our success is not so easy to see. But the fact is that we are succeeding."
Where are we succeeding Laura? Where? Fast! Go to the kitchen, your soufflé is deflating!

Mr Bush You've Done It!

U.S. Deaths Confirmed By The DoD: 2790

As of October 24th, according to the DOD, the number of americans lost in Iraq has reached 2790. This number is larger now that the amount of civilians killed in the 9/11 disaster (2752).
The irrational war our leader unleashed, from this point on, is costing more American lives than the actions of terrorists caused in New York City.
Republicans in Congress are now trying to put some distance between themselves and the White House, simply because the results of this stupid war in general are so obvious that's almost impossible to ignore, and also because they want to keep their majority of seats in both Houses.
Voting time is here in just a couple of weeks. We'll find out if we have learned from this experience or will continue the support of what it will turn out to be one of the worst administrations in the U.S. history.
While moguls and shareholders are celebrating the Dow at 1200 (something that most of the public have no idea what it means) the quality of jobs and wages is as low as it can be. We lost track of the horrendous national debt at this point and consumer prices keep on rising, as well as the cost of housing, utilities and other basic necesities.
It's hard to understand how anyone can still believe in these people at the helm and keep them in office, but, we'll see. May be, the fear campaign they are waging - one more time - will be effective. I sincerely hope that your vote won't be influenced by slogans and loose words such as terrorism, immigration, borders, security, etc, etc. and take a hard look at the results so far. I'll remember other words for that matter, like "Mission accomplished", "No child left behind", and similar appealing ideas that never prospered.
I'm sure "someone" is benefiting from all this chaos but I'm also sure it's not us, the common citizens.

Repuesta Ampliada a Un Defensor de MS13

Un comentario recibido a mi blog Mara Trucha MS13 y Otras Basuras referente a las pandillas, ha renovado mi preocupación con el tema. Sigue el comentario dejado por alguno de forma anónima:

“mara trucha es mas que una familia no somos solo simples delincuentes callejeros nuestra banda es una de las mejores estructuradas del planeta ..simplente encontramos la forma mas natural de vivir bajo la ley de la vida el mas fuerte vive el mas devil muere....VIVE POR DIOS , VIVE POR TU MADRE Y MUERE POR TU PANDILLA.”

En primer lugar, el anónimo defensor de estos personajes dice “no son solo simples delincuentes callejeros nuestra banda es una de las mejores estructuradas del planeta”. El sentido de orgullo de ir más allá de delincuentes comunes es rayano en lo patético aunque típico de la caradurez de estos individuos a quienes poco les importa el resto de la sociedad. Destacar que su banda, como le llama, es una de las mejores estructuradas del planeta es un argumento sin mérito. Existen muchas otras organizaciones que están perfectamente estructuradas y que no se dedican al crimen, el robo, la violencia y la distribución y venta de armas y drogas como es habitual entre ellos. La Cruz Roja (y es uno de tantos ejemplos), entre muchas otras organizaciones, también tiene una estructura que funciona. Sin embargo, cuando los desastres ocurren en los países de origen de estos maratrucheros, llegan allí para ofrecer ayuda y socorro a los mas necesitados, no para matarlos y sembrar el pánico. Solo Dios sabe cuantos de estos pandilleros se han beneficiado en esos casos y sin embargo, una vez que todo ha pasado y el sol sale nuevamente, regresan a sus inútiles vidas de parásitos.

Mas adelante el comentario dice: “simplente(sic) encontramos la forma mas natural de vivir bajo la ley de la vida el mas fuerte vive el mas devil(sic)muere..”

Solamente en su retorcida interpretación de la ley de la vida puede entenderse esto. La ley del mas fuerte puede tener aplicación en la selva, entre los animales, pero no entre seres humanos. Una bestia tiene que hacer lo que su instinto le dicta para sobrevivir, incluyendo matar a su presa. Pero atento a esto! Solo lo hace porque es la única forma que su naturaleza de animal le permite alimentarse. El corresponsal se olvida quizás que él y sus amigotes no son animales, aunque actúan como si lo fueran.

Finalmente dice: “VIVE POR DIOS, VIVE POR TU MADRE, Y MUERE POR TU PANDILLA”

Estos individuos se escudan en frases fáciles de digerir con las cuales quieren elevar sus actos. En otras palabras, recen mucho, quieran a su madre y ofrezcan su vida por la causa común de la pandilla. Estoy de acuerdo en lo que respecta a Dios y madre. Morir por una pandilla? Ni en sueños! Se ofrece la vida por causas nobles, por el bien común de una sociedad sana, para defender la patria, pero no por un montón de tatuados con pantalones caídos y manos aparentemente artríticas, que deambulan por el mundo con paquetitos de substancias dudosas en sus bolsillos y una 45 en el cinturón.

Estimado comentarista: Quizás ustedes se consideren héroes en sus barrios. Para mí los verdaderos héroes son los padres y madres de familia que, a pesar de todos sus problemas, trabajan duro para darles una educación a sus hijos y ponen comida en la mesa familiar sin dedicarse al crimen y las drogas. Héroes son aquellos que corren a ayudar a otros (incluyendo a ustedes) en casos de desastres. Héroes son los comerciantes honestos que sirven a la comunidad con productos que estos necesitan mientras ustedes están parados en la esquina de ese negocio pensando quizás en su próximo acto de violencia. Héroes son los niños que estudian con lo que pueden y con lo que tienen y luego regresan a sus hogares para ayudar a sus padres. Héroes son los maestros y las maestras que luchan para darles una mejor educación – a pesar de ustedes mismos – en escuelas cada vez más peligrosas. Héroes son las víctimas inocentes que ustedes dejan tiradas por las calles con sus batallas irracionales.

Héroes en fin son la mayoría de la sociedad que los observa con disgusto y desprecia la vida de violencia que ustedes predican.

Ustedes son la lacra de la sociedad, cobardes en definitiva, que al no poder enfrentarse con las realidades de la vida y buscar un mejor camino, han decidido que las armas, las drogas y la vida callejera son la solución. Cualquiera puede hacer lo que ustedes hacen. Salgan de la edad de piedra y súmense al Siglo XXI !

My Republican Friends

Yes, I do have some friends who, in spite of it all, still believe in the Republican credo and in those they have elected to guide our Country. Good partisan people, highly disappointed with their chosen ones, but trying hard to ride the Tsunami that is devastating their party and the political atmosphere around them. Not to mention the great divide created by their “uniter“.

And I must say, I feel sorry for them. I think they must be facing the same dilemma parents have when dealing with a child turned liar or a cheater.

The parental instinct moves to protect and to shell the culprit while having to face the external criticism from outside the family and intimately admitting that indeed, something is wrong with their offspring.

We Democrats went thru the same feelings when the far right hammered Clinton in the past with the Lewinski scandal. It was painful but at the same time, had a comic relief twist, with all the jokes and late night show takes on the affair.

Problem is, this time the outcome is far more serious. With so many casualties in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places where our citizens are suffering the results of a terribly failed policy, it’s hard for my Republican friends to find something that will give them hope in this messy situation.

To compound the situation and with the latest Foley affair, the Christian followers of George W. may also be wandering what the heck is going on and whether they have been sold damaged goods.

What will my Republican friends do in this mid-term election is anybody’s guess. Will they stay home? Will they give their vote to a Democrat or an Independent or will they go out and vote for the same people who have betrayed their confidence? Who knows. Let’s see how much they have learned from the past few years.

Las Vegas Hoy

Usted piensa vivir en Las Vegas, Nevada? Piénselo dos veces!
En las necesidades de una persona hay dos cosas que posiblemente sean las mas importantes en cuanto a su bienestar: Una casa en la cual vivir y un trabajo del cual pueda depender. De forma que he separado en dos este escrito para mayor claridad (espero) de las cifras que se dan en esta ciudad.
Una aclaración previa: Mis consideraciones no están dirigidas a aquellos que han decidido vivir en una casa amontonados con otras personas, caminen a su trabajo o vayan en bicicleta y coman una ración de frijoles y tortillas todos los días. (Ni siquiera creo que estas personas se tomen el trabajo de leer esto). Estoy pensando en las necesidades de alguien que desea progresar y disfrutar de las comodidades básicas de una ciudad relativamente moderna.

Como puede ver, las casas se están apilando pero no se venden como en años anteriores
Un ejemplo:
Una casa modesta con 3 dormitorios en un área no lujosa quizás pueda comprarse por $240.000. Suponiendo que usted paga $10.000 de contado, el préstamo será de $230.000 a 30 años con el 6.5% de interés. Pago mensual incluyendo impuestos y seguro del préstamo $1744.00
Este panorama es valido si su crédito es bueno solamente. Si su crédito es pasable, el interés puede irse hasta un 8% anual o más.
Otros gastos (muy conservativos!) mensuales de la propiedad: Basura $35.00 Electricidad promedio $130.00 Agua $40.00 Gas $80.00 Mantenimiento (arreglar esto o lo otro) $100.00, teléfono $40.00.

Vayamos a los ingresos ahora:
En Las Vegas el ingreso promedio es de $34.890. Fuente official Bureau of Economic Analysis
Sin embargo, los salarios reales de la mayoría de las ocupaciones en Las Vegas (hoteles en especial) trabajos de administración y servicios (mucamas, cocina, limpieza, mantenimiento etc.) tienen un promedio de $12.00 por hora bruto. Anual $24.960.00 Ingreso después de descuentos $21.965
Además la gente por supuesto tiene otros gastos, como: Comida mensual $150 por persona (conservativo) pago de un automóvil modesto $250.00, gasolina $120.00, ropa $50.00, artículos generales del hogar $30.00, salud $?, imprevistos?, ahorro?
Sumando estos otros gastos a los de la propiedad ($26.028.00 mas $7.200.00) Total anual de gastos, sin contar imprevistos, ahorros o gastos de salud $33.228.00

En definitiva, aun quien gana el salario “promedio” de $34.890, tiene muchas dificultades para mantenerse a flote ya que no estoy contando los imprevistos, no tendrá prácticamente ningún ahorro y roguemos no tenga gastos de salud. Por supuesto, no he podido encontrar ni un centavo para entretenimiento, comidas afuera, cine, etc.
El que quiera comprar casa hoy a estos precios, deberá hacerlo si tiene a otra persona con un ingreso similar (o por lo menos adecuado en su hogar) De otra forma, cualquier viento suave lo puede voltear y hacerse de una deuda casi imposible de resolver.

Estilo de vida:
Teniendo en cuenta que, una vez pasada la novedad de vivir entre todo este ruido y luces, solamente queda la rutina diaria, en medio del desierto, con temperaturas a veces imposibles y poco o nada que hacer con su tiempo libre (a menos que vaya a los casinos a dejar lo que no tiene).
Las Vegas era un lugar fantástico hace años, cuando era poco mas que un pueblo donde todos se conocían, los casinos prácticamente regalaban la comida, cruzarse con personajes famosos como Sinatra o Dean no causaba sorpresa y las propiedades costaban casi nada. Vida de pueblo, con poca gente y muy pocos gastos.

Algunos viejos de aquí inclusive recuerdan cuando los hoteles pagaban por la electricidad de toda la ciudad! Cierto que la llamada mafia era quien manejaba los negocios de los casinos, pero también es cierto que nunca molestaron a sus habitantes. Hoy la mafia antigua ha sido reemplazada por la mafia corporativa. Contadores y burócratas que dictan a la ciudad los términos de cada paso a seguir a fin de enriquecerse. Mientras millones de dólares diarios se vuelcan a sus arcas el poder adquisitivo de los soldados que los sirven es cada vez menor. No sé cuál de las dos mafias es peor.

En resumen:
Si decide vivir acá, olvídese de los cuentos rosados que ve en televisión acerca de Las Vegas. Hoy por hoy, es una ciudad dura, con gente cada vez más irritable, ingresos que muchas veces no están de acuerdo al esfuerzo realizado y, como ha visto anteriormente también, precios imposibles para el sueño de su casa propia. El crimen y el pandillerismo van en aumento y hay un crecimiento en población rayano en lo ridículo. Lo que me atrajo a esta ciudad hace mas de veinte años ha desaparecido por completo.

Quizás los únicos que puedan sacar algún provecho de todo este pandemonio (además claro esta de los súper poderosos que rigen el destino de la ciudad), son quienes dispongan de cierto capital y se animen a colocar su negocio propio. Y digo esto con reserva ya que muchos ilusionados con la promesa del boom de población existente, han fracasado por un motivo u otro.

More than denial

State of Denial, the book by Bob Woodward, is all the rage in Washington and most of the Country today, and has prompted irritability, impromptu press conferences and all the defensive moves mostly expected from the Bush administration.

But I think the present situation goes beyond one individual. State of denial can be applied to someone who either by conviction or stupidity is not able to differentiate between the facts and his own delirious ideas. However, when seemingly everyone around him follows the same pattern by explaining away their mistakes, miscalculations and lack of understanding of their own objectives, and forever twisting all the evidence available to fit their agenda, then it goes beyond denial and becomes a collective concerted effort to cover each other’s ass.

I’m not going to go into detail of what’s out there, public record by now, that discredit the words of not only George W. but Condi Rice, Rumsfeld, Cheney and others who belong to this tight circle of people rearranging history as they go. What I will say though is this: How much more of this B.S. can we take?

Is there anyone out there who really enjoys, or even believes, what Bush or any of his cronies has to say about our present situation in the World, the economy and other factors affecting our everyday life?
Better yet. Are we getting any real input from our leaders? So far, they respond quickly when negative facts come to light and not much more. Leave them alone and their speeches and comments are as bland as baby food.

From Bush we hear: “hard”, “terrsts”, “terrer”,”war” without having really accomplished much at most levels. Condi is a master in moving words around to explain facts as she sees fit and never considering other points of view. Rusmfeld hides behind Bush’s reassurance that he’s the man for the job while many of the top brass don’t agree with this. Cheney, very wisely, keeps as low a profile as he can, and keeps on laughing all the way to the bank. Karl Rove has become the invisible man lately. In general, all of them seem to be grouping together to confront the siege from all fronts, including some of their own party.

It’ looks like a sinking ship where everyone is trying to hold on to the mast and every rat on board is running to the upper deck. The ship being the administration, constantly busy plugging holes, the mast looks a lot like George and the rest, well, you know who they are. The hope here is that the sea of facts and the rocking waves created by bad news will dissipate and the opposing wave of public opinion won’t touch them, thus, avoiding being swallowed by the waters.

Perhaps that will be the outcome, a big storm that will pass and they will finish a failed tenure. However, at least in this instance, the waters are very dirty and contamination and filth is unavoidable. The dream of going into history as the War President on the part of Bush is practically over and if he has a smidgen of intelligence left he should abandon the one way mentality he’s known for and be more pragmatic. Doubtful but possible.
